Scriptures Relevant to Fighting Any Temptation

Jesus overcame temptation by quoting scripture, so we can do the same thing:

Matthew 4:1-4

The Temptation of Jesus

1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. 2For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry. 3During that time the devil* came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, `People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”

(That scripture He quoted is Deuteronomy 8:3)

Sometimes I wish God didn’t think I could stand so much….

1Corinthians 10:13

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

Isaiah 7:9

…Unless your faith is firm, I cannot make you stand firm.

Here’s a good scripture to quote when faced with any temptation:

Isaiah 50:7

7Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will not be put to shame.

Nobody is perfect, so you know you will give in to temptation sometimes. When you slip up and give in to temptation, thankfully Jesus does not cast you out. Instead He offers Himself as a sacrifice to cancel out your mistake.

Hebrews 4:14-Hebrews 5:3

Christ Is Our High Priest

14So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Hebrews 5

1Every high priest is a man chosen to represent other people in their dealings with God. He presents their gifts to God and offers sacrifices for their sins. 2And he is able to deal gently with ignorant and wayward people because he himself is subject to the same weaknesses. 3That is why he must offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as theirs.
